Riverside loop - taken from Do It By Cycle.
1) Starting at the Transporter Bridge, head West on the off road cycle path along Vulcan street.
2) Turn right onto the cycle track upon reaching Teesasaurus Park.
3) Follow the cycle path West, running parallel to the River Tees. This stretch of cycle way continues for approximately 1-½ miles.
4) Upon reaching Newport Bridge, turn and head back towards Middlesbrough centre following the diversion signs currently in use. In the future, there will be cycle paths installed parallel to the railway track using the newly installed section of path heading towards Riverside park
5) Once at Riverside Park Road, cross over the railway bridge with the spiral decent, and along to Marsh Road. On Marsh Road, take the cycle path on the left, which goes under Metz Bridge. 6) Leave the cycle path, and return back onto Marsh Road, leading to Station Street and then to Zetland Road, which passes Middlesbrough train station.
7) At the traffic lights at the end of Zetland Road, turn right onto Albert Road and head into Middlesbrough Town Centre.
8) Follow Albert Road under the A66 flyover and past Middlesborough Town Hall. Just after the Town Hall, take the cycle route on the left, which goes through Central Square. MIMA is situated in Central Square, along with Central Library, Middlesbrough Crown Courts, and the infamous bottle of notes sculpture.
9) After passing through Central square, turn left on to Bright Street, and cross Marton road using the Toucan Crossing point. Follow Cargo Fleet Road, heading toward France Street Car Park, and use the brightly coloured A66 underpass, back onto Cargo Fleet Road after crossing the railway track.
10) Use the sloped bridge to gain access to Shepherdson way. Once on Shepherdson way, head North towards The Riverside Stadium.
11) Head past the Stadium, and over the bridge towards Scotts Road. Stay on Scotts Road until reaching Middlesbrough College, where you take a right turn onto Vulcan Street. Follow Vulcan Street back to the Transporter Bridge.

BG FREIGHT LINE LINKS TEESPORT TO ANTWERP AND ROTTERDAM

BG Freight Line (BG) has launched a twice-weekly service linking Teesport with Antwerp and Rotterdam. BG, part of the Peel Ports Group, has operated a service linking Grangemouth with the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam for eleven years. The service currently employs two 366 teu (twenty foot equivalent unit) sized vessels, making three rotations a week.
BG, using local agents GAC-OBC, has now extended the service to include Teesport.
One rotation sees the first vessel call at Antwerp on Friday, Rotterdam on Saturday and Teesport on Sunday. This vessel then calls Grangemouth on Monday and returns to Antwerp for Wednesday.
The second schedule connecting Rotterdam with Teesport calls at Rotterdam on Thursday, Teesport on Friday returning to Rotterdam for Saturday. This schedule is operated by an additional vessel specifically chartered by BG to support the Teesport service.
David Robinson, PD Ports’ Group CEO, says: “BG is the only feeder company linking Teesport to the Port of Antwerp and we are delighted to welcome them to the Port. This service adds this important extra Port to those destinations already regularly served from Teesport.”
BG accepts all types of container and tank traffic. With the specially fitted vessels in the fleet, BG can offer space for 45ft long 2.55 wide high cube containers as well as any length tank or bulk container.

Fulfilling Role for Middlesbrough Company

A local sandwich company is hoping to see a rise in production after moving to new premises on Riverside Park, Middlesbrough.
On A Roll has moved to a unit more than five times the size of its original space after working with Tees Valley Regeneration to secure a Selective Finance for Investment grant from One NorthEast of £175,000. The grant is provided to support expansion and company growth and will help create over 40 new jobs.
On A Roll, which counts local football clubs, schools, colleges and universities amongst its customer base, is already exceeding initial production forecasts. It is a significant step for the company which only started operating in 2007. On A Roll Managing Director James Stoddart said; "We are running on enthusiasm and momentum at the moment and are very keen to keep that going. The company is still just in its early stages of development and there are many more opportunities out there which we hope to take.
"Only last year we were buying our bread every morning from a local supermarket.. now the shopping list is a little longer but we still take pride in the freshness of our products. Today we source our ingredients from local suppliers; we're doing the same job just on a much bigger scale!"
Richard Hunter, Tees Valley Regeneration Business Investment Manager commented; "On A Roll are very ambitious and the SFI grant has helped to bring their plans to forward. Already they have installed a heat transfer system which uses waste energy from the industrial fridges to boil water then used to sterilise the plant at the end of production - it's an impressive operation to watch."
One NorthEast Director of Business and Industry, Ian Williams said; "On A Roll is a genuine local success story. It's great to see a homegrown Tees Valley company performing so well in the face of the current challenging economic conditions. i am delighted that One NorthEast has been able to support them with grant investment."

New Road Scheme Will Make North Middlesbrough More Accessible

WORK on a major new road scheme to encourage regeneration and improve access off the A66 into the North Middlesbrough area starts on Monday, July 14, 2008.
The North Middlesbrough Accessibility Scheme will provide a new route from the Newport roundabout to and from the Riverside Park industrial estate. The aim is to ease congestion at the Hartington Interchange.
The work will also involve widening the A66 in both directions between the A19 interchange and the Newport interchange to further improve the flow of traffic in and out of Middlesbrough.
The capacity of the Newport roundabout will also be increased by providing an extra lane and increasing the traffic signal control.
The scheme, which was granted final Government funding approval in June 2008, is designed to ensure that the potential of Middlehaven and Riverside Park is fully realised.
The £15.4m scheme is largely funded by the Department for Transport with £2.3m from Middlesbrough Council and other local agencies.
The works have been designed by Halcrow and will be constructed by Balfour Beatty, with White Young Green managing the project on behalf of the council.
A significant advantage of the scheme is that most of the work on the new access road can be done with minimum disruption to the travelling public.
However, in order to widen the existing A66 carriageways, single lane closures and a temporary 30mph speed limit will be necessary. These lane closures will operate tidally to minimise the effect on peak morning traffic into the town or evening traffic leaving the town.
Off-peak works will also be necessary on Newport Roundabout and in addition a temporary closure of the eastbound slip road onto the A66.
Works on the A66 is expected to last for approximately 30 weeks with the scheme completed by Spring 2010.
All businesses adjacent to the works including the Letitia Industrial Estate and Discount DIY will trade as usual.

An exciting mixed-use regeneration scheme has been given the green light in the north-east, with a construction firm now committed to delivering phase one of the £4 million works.Hall Construction Services will start work on Middlesbrough's Middlehaven regeneration project, which will look to transform the area around new institution Middlesbrough College – and create jobs in the process.Bridge Street East, Dock Street and the Clock Tower Square will fall within the bounds of renovation efforts, with developers looking to create a public performance space and events square.
When distinctive paving, public art, seating and trees are installed, it is hoped that the project will generate new interest in the area and pave the way for job creation in retail and other sectors.Hall, the chosen construction firm, operates builds building, civil engineering, and earthworks divisions, experiencing a positive growth period on the back of major public projects such as Middlehaven.Business development manager Tim Barrick told the Northern Echo: "We expect to hit that figure again next year at least. We have started the financial year slightly ahead of where we normally are."

“With the construction of the new access road from Newport Roundabout this has influenced
Intelect’s decision to commit to a £2.5m development for our office and workshop relocation.”
Other new developments include MF Sealings and Easter Park, which itself is providing new high-quality workspace.
Middlesbrough Council is actively promoting the image of Riverside Park and the environment it offers for local businesses. A Quality Agenda and Design Guide advise companies on getting the best from their building designs and materials.
Work is progressing well on the North Middlesbrough Accessibility Scheme which is putting a new access road into Riverside Park.
The rail bridge beams have been successfully lifted into position during a night time blockade on the rail track. The new roundabout on Riverside Park Road and the widening of the A66 and

Not unsurprisingly, this meant there was no ‘joined up’ approach to estate management, investment and promotion. This affected the property market and at one time 40 per cent of the business units were vacant and brownfield sites undeveloped.
A survey (commissioned by Middlesbrough Council) highlighted several key areas for improvement, including: access; the physical environment; the condition of brownfield sites; security and the public’s and business community’s perceptions of the area.

The reasons that so many companies are selecting Riverside Park as a location are clear. It is close to the town centre, adjacent to the flagship Middlehaven development and has an established infrastructure. Middlesbrough Council is committed to creating the right environment for business through a number of targeted initiatives.
What's been happening?
Improvements to the area have included the introduction of new contemporary lighting, various environmental improvements and the introduction of CCTV within the core area of Riverside Park. These Fund, Sport England, Groundwork improvements are being extended to the boundary with Greater Middlehaven. This has all been made possible with funding from the Tees Valley Partnership Single Programme, European Regional Development South Tees and contributions from Middlesbrough Council, of over £3 million.
Who's involved?
An active business forum have been heavily involved in deciding the new image for the estate which also sees the adoption of the Riverside Park logo. This logo will soon be seen on the entrance banner drums, which will be installed over the coming months.
What's being done about transport?
Access improvements are forthcoming, with a highway improvement scheme of £11 million due to be completed over the next few years, which will include a direct access road to Riverside Park.

Not only is this an excellent alternative route to work, but the cycleway also provides sustainable healthy links to a number of watersports related facilities along this section of the river, that provide opportunities for participation in activities such as sailing, sailboarding, rowing, white water rafting, water skiing etc.
The 17-kilometre route enables cyclists, walkers and people with disabilities to gain access to the River Tees to celebrate the river, with fine views of the historic Transporter and Newport Bridges as well as more modern crossings such as the Tees Barrage.
How much further will the current funding go?
The final stages of the current regeneration projects include the installation of contemporary signage, further environmental improvements and the renaissance of Teessaurus Park. There is also grant funding available for businesses within the Greater Riverside Park area for external improvements.

An action plan for Riverside Park is being prepared to continue to secure financial support to transform the area into one of Middlesbrough's most desirable out-of-town sites.

Dinosaur Park - Teesaurus Park
An eight-foot high stegosaurus stands with her baby on the south bank of the river Tees, with the cooling towers of Haverton Hill in the background.
Teessaurus Park was opened in 1979, and at first featured only one T-rex sculpture.
In 1987 the life-size, steel skeletons of dinosaurs including stegosaurus, brontosaurus, brachiasaurus and a mammoth were added.
